Grandstand design nears completion. Staff met with design architects and R&M Engineering to discuss the Walker Field Grandstand Project.

Ribbon cutting ceremony was held prior to the Kayhi Kings first home game.
April 21, 2024
Public Works accepted final completion of Walker Field from Dawson Construction and FieldTurf USA. Parks and Field staff installed site amenities and the new turf mound, readying the field for use by April 24, 2024. Kayhi Baseball was notified they could start using the field for practice.
April 15, 2024
Dawson Construction completing punch list items, including last minute improvements to the perimeter in preparation for asphalt later in the spring, and completing minor items along the perimeter fencing. Protective bollards have been installed and the concrete dugout sacking is complete. FieldTurf installed and patched in the striping and “K” logo. Work during a break in the ongoing storm pattern allowed the preliminary lift of sand infill to be placed on the surface. The remaining rubber and olive pit infill materials will be installed as the weather allows.
February 15, 2024
A team of contractors and field users turned on and tested the new field lighting. The lights are fully operational illuminating the field with minimal impact to the surrounding area. Security lighting turns on automatically on the back side of the light poles when the field lights are turned off.
December 18, 2023
Dawson Construction completed the installation of the base capping rock, a 6-inch lift of free draining rock on which FieldTurf will place a finished lift of drain rock followed by the turf surfacing. Dawson also completed the installation of a concrete perimeter retaining wall and concrete blocks along the northerly perimeter of the Maintenance Building property.
November 20, 2023
Dawson construction is continuing steady progress:
- Fencing subcontractors set 40’ backstop posts and placed all fencing hardware
- Excavation for KPU’s raw water main extension commenced. This work is being done to extend the new HDPE main outside of the field surface, to prevent the possibility of future main failure under the new turf
- Electrical sub-contractors completed majority of underground conduit runs
- Right field dugout formed and concrete poured
- Cast in-place outfield retaining wall completed
- Demolition of the Minor-league grandstands
- Drain rock for the turf field sub surface will be arriving November 15th, and test runs to evaluate compaction and drainage with take place on-site prior to placing the drain rock on the field surface.
November 1, 2023
Work continues on Norman Walker Field sitework and turf installation process. This project has two components: the sitework awarded to Dawson Construction in the amount of $2,265,958.00, and the acquisition of various materials (e.g. chain link fencing, capping rock, etc.) and installation of capping rock, lighting, and turf from FieldTurf USA in the amount of $2,727,636.47.
Dawson Construction’s work:
- The surrounding sidewalk is approximately 65% complete
- Field subgrade has been established with roller compaction consistently underway
- The former little league grandstand and Harry Ludwigsen concessions stand were demolished on October 31. This area is slated to be a dog park, as the field surface will no longer be available for people to run their dogs.
FieldTurf work:
- Installed electrical conduits and facilitating the light pole base installation with Dawson Construction.
